Deputy Foreign Minister Senator Datuk Marzuki Yahya denied saying that bilateral trade between Malaysia and China surpassed the US$100bil threshold “for the first time” in 2018 in his speech at the Chinese Embassy’s Chinese New Year celebration on Sunday.
He made the denial after I pointed out his mistake on Facebook yesterday by highlighting that the two-way trade had reached the historic high of RM106bil a few years back. (Read:https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/…/wee-marzuki-face-off-o…/)
YB Deputy Minister, to refresh your memory, this is what you said, verbatim:
“In 2018, the first time, according to the Chinese data, bilateral trade between Malaysia and China surpassed US$100bil threshold.”
Reports in several Chinese newspapers also confirmed that you said “the first time” in your speech.
Pakatan Harapan ministers should refrain from praising themselves too much and then denying their statements when they are caught committing blunder. Deputy Foreign Minister aside, Finance Minister too should heed my advice when commenting on tax collection.
The right thing for Mazuki to do is to admit he has made a boo-boo, do his homework and be humble.
